Science:
In science we have been looking at the properties of different materials and their suitability. We investigated various objects in the classroom and we came up with words to describe these materials and compared them.

What you can do at home...

. Investigate different objects around your house. How have these materials been used ? What are they like? Do you think another material would be more suitable? How many different ways has this material been used?

Examples of materials:

. Wood   . Plastic    . Rubber    .Glass    . Rock     . Wool

History:

We will be continuing our learning of The Great Fire of London.
Follow the link below to find out more information.

Maths:
Estimating objects and grouping in sets of 5s, 10s or 20s to check our answers.

What you can do at home...

. I have set some games on Active Learn for you to go over. I will hand out the usernames and passwords again for these in case they have been lost (Tuesday)

Reading:

Try to read as much as you can with your child to help them to develop a love for reading. You may not only read their reading books that they bring home from school, but also read them a bedtime story. Let your child read with you, taking it turns to read a section. Let your child ask questions throughout to develop their curiosity and ask them questions to check their own understanding. Pick out the vocabulary that they have learnt.

I cannot stress enough, how important it is that the children are exposed to a variety of stories in both English and in Spanish.

                                     Spellings:

Please continue to work with your children on their spellings. They will only need to learn the 6 spellings that are in their spelling book.

Homework this week

This weeks homework!

Today the children have been given their spelling lists ready to learn for next week´s spelling quiz!

English:

Their English homework this week is to learn these spellings and use them in context.
Each child has been given a snakes and ladders game to play to learn their spellings. Once they have learnt them and are confident with those spellings, they should try to use the words in a sentence- this can be completed orally or written in their spelling books.

Maths:

From next week I will be uploading games and activity onto Active Learn. Next week I will provide all the children with their usernames and passwords to access these games.

This week: Number facts game. Again, these questions can be completed orally with an adult, or written down.

1. I am thinking of a number. It is an odd number between 10 and 30. The two digits of my number add up to 5. The difference between the two digits of my number is 1,

What is my number?

2. I am thinking of a number. It is an even number. It is in the 2 and the 4 times table (a multiple) and is between 10 and 30. If I add two numbers together that are the same they will make my number.

What is my number?

3. I am thinking of a number. It is an odd number. It is in the 5 times table (a multiple) and if you split this number into tens and ones and add them together, they make 10.

What is my number?

Challenge: Try to create your own ´ I am thinking of a number game´. Bring your facts into school and we will try to guess your number!

Welcome to Year 2!  So far we have had a fantastic start to Year 2. These past two weeks we have been getting settled in the classroom and learning the new class routines and rules.

This week have spoken about our goals and aspirations for the end of Year 2 and have created an aspiration tree for our classroom.

We have also started our guided reading lessons focusing on inference of pictures. As a class we discuss the picture below and came up with some wonderful ideas about what we saw in the picture and what type of characters the wolf and the little boy in the tree were.

All of our ideas were different. Here are a few examples of the many ideas.
" The wolf is protecting the little boy from danger"
" A little boy has transformed into a wolf at night"
" The wolf tried to eat the little boy. He left his tie"

We then used the picture to begin thinking about our own stories.

This week we will be starting our topic ´The Great Fire of London´ and recapping our phonics looking at the set 2 and 3 speed sounds already learnt.  Next week we will start our Read Write Inc lessons.

What you can do at home this week:

. Read with your children in both Spanish and English. Asking them questions about their book. For example:

- How was your character feeling at the start of your book? How did it change towards the end?
- If you could change a part of the book, what would it be? Why?
- Would you like to be a character in this story? Give me two reasons why.

. Phonics:
- Revisit set 2 and 3 sounds

. Use the following website to practice reading the high frequency words:

Can you write them once you have read them ?
